This week’s Window Walk Gallery, Highlighted Artist of the Week is Maria Cervantes!
“I was born in Mexicali and moved to the Desert area when I was 2 and have been here locally ever since.
I joined Windy Springs Wellness Center in 2014 after becoming homeless because of challenges, including mental illness. Here I was able to work on my recovery, have a home again, and get my independence back, as well as learning many coping skills and wellness tools to help manage my symptoms and keep me on my recovery journey.
It has been an amazing journey and one of my favorite wellness tools is painting.
Before taking ‘Expressive Recovery’ art therapy classes at Windy Springs Wellness Center, I had never painted before in my life. With instructor Julie’s support, I have come a long way now, and continue to grow, and started painting at home, and then with a fellow classmate on weekends.
I feel very proud to be in the “Window Walk Art Gallery” exhibition and even more to be “Artist of the Week.” This is very exciting for me and makes me very happy.”
